A Message from our New Police Chief

Hello everybody, my name is Ramon Batista, and I am the newly appointed Police Chief for the City of Santa Monica. Here’s a little bit about me.

I have spent the majority of my adult life serving in public safety. Becoming a police officer was a childhood dream. I had the opportunity to live that dream starting with the Tucson Police Department where I spent the first ten years of my career as a police officer. During my tenure there, I worked in every major area of operations. And, after 31 years, I retired as an assistant chief of police. On my career path to becoming a police chief, I attended every major law enforcement executive training program in the country.

And, in 2017 I became the chief of the Mesa Arizona Police Department where we accomplished numerous breakthrough achievements, and reinforced community partnerships while keeping both the community and the officers safe.

I am married to my amazing wife, Nina, and we have two great kids and one beautiful grandchild.

It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Santa Monica Police Department in the mission of providing you unparalleled public safety. The Santa Monica Police Department has a history of dedicated service and collaborative community engagement. My goal is to strengthen and support the ideals of building trust and legitimacy in pursuit of advancing the principles of 21st Century Policing.

It is my strong belief that we have an outstanding police department. The members of this agency stand ready to grow into the future. We have the internal capacity, our members possess an exceptional, intellectual body of knowledge and understanding. Our goal will be to apply our strengths in conjunction with our community to solve problems.

I will be everyone’s chief. I will fight for justice and safety in our community and I will stand proudly for the officers and professional staff, showcasing and talking about the good work they’re doing.

The goals of community safety and officer safety are not mutually exclusive; they are two arcs of strength and resilience that are at their best when they are complimentary of each other and moving in the same direction. Put another way, public safety and justice in policing are not mutually exclusive, we can and will do both.

I am excited about our future and I look forward to meeting you and working with you as we, collectively, move forward with our new City Manager and City Council to continue the work of making Santa Monica one of the best places to live and play.

Un mensaje de nuestro nuevo Jefe de Policía

Hola a todos, mi nombre es Ramón Batista, soy el nuevo jefe de policía de la Ciudad de Santa Mónica. Aquí hay un poco sobre mí, he pasado la mayor parte de mi vida adulta trabajando en seguridad pública. Convertirme en un oficial de policía era un sueño de mi infancia. Tuve la oportunidad de vivir ese sueño empezando con el Departamento de Policía de Tucson donde pasé los primeros diez años de mi carrera como un oficial de policía. Durante mi tiempo ahí trabajé en todas las áreas principales de operaciones. Y, después de 31 años, me retiré como jefe auxiliar de la policía. En mi trayectoria profesional para convertirme en un jefe de policía, asistí a cada programa de capacitación para ejecutivos de las fuerzas de orden del país.

En 2017, me convertí en el jefe del Departamento de Policía de Mesa Arizona donde alcanzamos numerosos logros importantes, reforzamos las alianzas comunitarias al tiempo que mantuvimos seguros tanto a la comunidad como a los oficiales.

Estoy casado con mi maravillosa esposa, Nina, tenemos dos grandiosos hijos y un hermoso nieto.

Es un honor tener la oportunidad de guiar a los hombres y mujeres en el departamento de policía de Santa Mónica en la misión de brindarles una seguridad pública incomparable. El Departamento de Policía de Santa Mónica tiene un historial de servicio dedicado y participación comunitaria colaborativa. Mi objetivo es el fortalecer y apoyar los ideales de la formación de confianza y legitimidad en la búsqueda de promover los principios de la Policía del Siglo 21.

Creo firmemente que tenemos un departamento de policía excepcional, los integrantes de este organismo están preparados para crecer en el futuro. Tenemos la capacidad interna, nuestros miembros poseen un cuerpo intelectual excepcional de conocimientos y comprensión. Nuestro objetivo será aplicar nuestras fortalezas junto con nuestra comunidad para solucionar problemas.

Seré el jefe de todos y lucharé por la justicia y seguridad en nuestra comunidad y defenderé con orgullo a los oficiales y personal profesional, mostrando y hablando sobre el buen trabajo que hacen.

Los objetivos de la seguridad comunitaria y la seguridad de los agentes no se excluyen entre sí, son dos arcos de fuerza y resistencia que son más fuertes y se complementan uno al otro cuando se mueven en la misma dirección. Dicho de otra manera, la seguridad pública y la justicia de la actividad policial no son mutuamente excluyentes, podemos y haremos ambas cosas.

Me entusiasma nuestro futuro y espero conocerles y trabajar con ustedes mientras nosotros, colectivamente, nos avanzamos con nuestro nuevo Administrador de la Ciudad y el Consejo para continuar el trabajo de hacer de Santa Mónica uno de los mejores lugares para vivir y jugar.
