Women’s History Month is a great time to celebrate women writers and the impact of women on community and culture.

Recommendations from our very own Director of Library Services, Patty Wong:

Scholastique Mukasonga’s The Barefoot Woman (2018) is a powerful memoir of her life post-Rwandan genocide, and of her promise to her mother to cover her body in her passing, not physically, but figuratively through her beautiful prose.

Kristin Swinth’s Feminism’s Forgotten Fight: The Unfinished Struggle for Work and Family (2018) cites the historical impact of secondwave feminists in creating institutional change. A plethora of books about equity of access for women has surfaced, with great titles for people of all ages.

For younger readers, check out Fly Girls: The Daring American Women Pilots Who Helped Win WWII by P. O’Connell Pearson.

Recommendation from our Mayor, Gleam Davis:

Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in Space by Lynn Sherr. This is a fascinating story about a brilliant woman who defied expectations and stereotypes. She literally flew through the glass ceiling. Her final resting place is here in Santa Monica at Woodlawn. There’s something for everyone at your Santa Monica Public Library. The Main Library and Fairview Branch, Montana Branch, Ocean Park Branch, and Pico Branch libraries are full of great choices.
