The holidays have officially arrived in Santa Monica—lights are twinkling, storefronts are buzzing, and our streets are filled with shoppers, visitors, and neighbors enjoying the season. With all that excitement (and all those shopping bags), it’s a great time to slow down for a moment and think about staying safe. A few simple precautions can help keep your holidays joyful, stress-free, and focused on the things that truly matter to you.

We’re Doing Our Part

We are working hard to keep the season bright, too. You’ll see increased visibility from our sworn and civilian personnel in major shopping areas and busy corridors. We are there to deter crime and assist you, so please feel free to say hello!

Tips:

Stay Aware in the Holiday Hustle

Between checking your gift list, snapping photos, and taking in the sights, it’s easy to get distracted. When you’re in crowded areas, take a second to look up, stay alert, and keep track of your surroundings. Well-lit streets and walkways are your friend, and a little situational awareness can go a long way toward keeping the season bright.

Keep Pickpockets Off Your Shopping List

Unfortunately, pickpockets love the holidays too—they know people are carrying more, rushing more, and paying less attention. A few festive-friendly tips:

Keep Your “Sleigh” Secure

Whether you’re out shopping or grabbing dinner, remember to protect your vehicle and belongings. Lock your doors every time, keep windows fully closed, and place shopping bags out of sight. Parking under good lighting helps, too.

Protect Holiday Deliveries

Packages arrive at nearly every doorstep this time of year, and porch pirates are unfortunately well aware. To keep your gifts safe:

Home Safety for Holiday Getaways

If you’re traveling, give your home the appearance that someone’s home:

Celebrate and Cheer Safely

Holiday gatherings are part of what makes this season special. If you’ll be enjoying festive beverages, plan a safe ride home. Keep an eye on friends, celebrate responsibly, and don’t hesitate to report anything that feels out of place. The goal is simple: make memories, not mishaps.

The Santa Monica Police Department wishes you a safe, joyful, and spirited holiday season. With a little awareness and preparation, you can make the most of everything this time of year has to offer—warm lights, good company, and peace of mind included.
