At their meeting on Tuesday, November 23rd2021, the Council unanimously voted to direct staff to send a letter to the California Redistricting Commission to be signed by the Mayor requesting that the City remain in a Congressional district with the beach and westside cities most closely aligned with the City’s issues, challenges, and values. The draft Congressional maps at issue would align the City of Santa Monica into a Congressional district with communities located in the San Fernando Valley. In addition to the matter of Santa Monica’s policy interests being better aligned with its current Congressional district, the City also participates in a mutual aid cohort with the neighboring cities of Beverly Hills, Culver City, and West Hollywood. Without this cohort, the City would lose essential funding for our public safety departments as well as mutual support in the face of an emergency. The letter signed by Mayor Himmelrich can be read here.
