Learn about Santa Monica’s Landmarks process, discuss different ways to recognize history in Santa Monica, and connect with neighbors over food and drink on Sunday, April 19!

Join the Santa Monica Landmarks Commissioners and Preservation Working Group members for a special Landmarks Commission community meeting about social justice and historic preservation in Santa Monica from 2 - 5 p.m. at Marine Park Auditorium.

This Community Meeting is a product of the Working Group on Social Justice/Equity in Preservation, established in June 2022 by the Landmarks Commission following City Council direction. The Working Group presented their findings to City Council on February 11, 2025, in a report titled “A Place for Everyone in Santa Monica’s History.”

According to the report, “telling truthful stories from history presents an opportunity to interpret what has come before, understand how it impacts us today, and presents an opportunity for reparative improvement in the future.”

The meeting on April 19 represents a small but meaningful step toward connecting communities across Santa Monica; we still have a lot to learn from each other.

The meeting will feature two parts:

Part One: a presentation from the Working Group about their findings, a summary of the Landmarks process in Santa Monica, and group discussion about a wide range of ways to recognize history.

Part Two: small-group workshops facilitated by the Working Group and City Planning staff. Participants will be asked to consider:

  1. What qualities might raise an application marked by the City’s exclusionary development history to the Landmarks Commission’s special review?
  2. Are there significant places in Santa Monica that should be recognized or remembered, even if the place no longer exists?

We hope to see you there!

Please RSVP here. View the flyer here.
