Santa Monica Celebrates Women's History Month

In celebration of Women's History Month, the Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) in collaboration with local partners has put together its annual calendar of events embracing the 2018 theme:  "Nevertheless She Persisted: Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination Against Women."

COSW will highlight the contributions of women and girls with a kick-off reception on Tuesday, February 27 at City Hall starting at 6 pm featyring a student poetry and art exhibition and a special singing performance by the Santa Monica High School Beautyshop Girls. This will immediately be followed by an official proclamation by City Council and the mayor officially declaring March Women's History Month. The public is welcome to attend.

Highlights of some events at the beginning of March include:

International Women’s Day Breakfast

Thursday, March 1, 7 – 9 a.m.

Hosted by the Santa Monica Chamber, Organization of Women Leaders (OWL) and the Commission on the Status of Women. 

Over 450 women leaders will gather at the Loews Santa Monica to honor two outstanding women who persisted. Past honorees include: Amy Ziering, Elaine Polachek, Jennifer Garner, Bettina Duval, Mallika Chopra, Jacqueline Seabrooks, Christine Devine. For event cost please visit our website.

Living History Tour 

Saturday, March 3 from 11 am - 3 pm at the Woodlawn Cemetery.

This free event for the entire family has become an annual event because of its popularity. History comes alive as actors portraying notable men and women interred at the cemetery.

Home Truth - Movie Screening and Panel Discussion

Wednesday, March 7th

Hosted by Westside Anti-Violence Authority & Sojourn.

Katie Maguire and April Hayes’ documentary chronicles the legal efforts of a mother to gain justice for her three young daughters killed by their father.

Women and Homelessness Panel Discussion

Thursday, March 8, 12 - 1:30 pm. 

This free event will include a panel of women who work in homeless services.
