Candidate Statement in English

Mahatma Gandhi taught us many years ago to “Be the change you want to see in the world.” I learned this lesson my first year in college – and have lived by it ever since. Given my professional experience and commitment to our community, I am called to run for the Santa Monica College Board to benefit the students, faculty, and staff of SMC, as well as residents of Santa Monica and Malibu.

As a history professor for over twenty years, the last fifteen at Long Beach City College and CSULB, I know what it takes for a college to be a vibrant engine for its students and the larger community. I know from years of teaching what social justice and student equity mean. Moreover, as a current community college professor, I am in the trenches of the current conversion to online modalities and can bring that knowledge to the Board to help guide SMC through the present pandemic-related challenges.

Lastly, as a proud Santa Monica resident raising a family in the Pico neighborhood, with two children in the SMMUSD, I will always have a keen eye on how the decisions made by SMC impact Santa Monica and Malibu.
