Date: Sat., February 11th, 2023, 9:45AM PST

This multi-site tour will explore three significant places in Santa Monica history and how we express remembrance in public space. Our first stop is Kuruvungna Village Springs, a sacred site and cultural center for local Indigenous communities, followed by a visit to Santa Monica City Hall to discuss the Stanton Macdonald-Wright mural in the lobby. We'll conclude at Historic Belmar Park and walk through an example of a recent public art and civic memory project. Attendees should be prepared for weather and some uneven ground, but all locations are accessible.

free chartered bus will leave from the Santa Monica Courthouse (1725 Main St, Santa Monica, CA 90401) at 9:45am and will take attendees back to Santa Monica City Hall after the Springs portion. For the last portion it's a .3-mile walk from City Hall to Historic Belmar Park. If you need to skip the tour bus experience, Kuruvungna Springs is located at 1439 S Barrington Ave, Los Angeles CA 90025 and that portion begins at 10am. Driving there? Plan extra time to find street parking.

This activity is part of the Reframe: City Hall Mural project event series organized by Meztli Projects, an Indigenous-based arts & culture collaborative centering Indigeneity into the creative practice of Los Angeles by using arts-based strategies to support, advocate for, and organize to highlight Native and Indigenous Artists and systems-impacted peoples. Meztli Projects’ facilitation team is Joel Garcia, Robin Garcia Ph.D., Susannah Laramee Kidd Ph.D., and Rosten Woo.

As part of its Acknowledge and Reframe Together (Reframe) initiative, the City of Santa Monica has embarked on a public process to consider the meaning, impact and potential responses to the WPA-era mural by Stanton Macdonald-Wright in the lobby of historic City Hall. The Reframe: City Hall Mural project offers a series of civic memory conversations and activities to connect Santa Monicans' diverse histories and contemporary experiences. This process explores representation in public art and how community stories are told so that we can develop creative ideas for future events, public art, and policy updates. Each event will offer a different way to engage with the process of considering the mural. The whole arc of learning events will provide community members with the tools to help amend and celebrate Santa Monica history and take part in Reframe!
