Fire Prevention Week Open House
Saturday, Oct 10, 2026
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Join the Santa Monica Fire Department in celebrating Fire Prevention Week 2026. This year’s theme is "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, e-bikes, e-scooters, toys, and other rechargeable devices. While these batteries are an important part of our everyday lives, they can pose a fire risk when they are damaged, improperly used, or charged incorrectly.
This Fire Prevention Week, we’re helping families learn simple ways to charge and use these devices safely:
- Use the correct charger and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface where heat can dissipate.
- Avoid charging devices while sleeping or when no one is home.
- Keep charging devices away from beds, couches, pillows, and other materials that can burn.
- Never use batteries or devices that are damaged, swollen, leaking, or overheating.
- Replace damaged batteries and devices and dispose of them properly.
To share this important safety information with our community, SMFD is hosting:
Saturday, October 10, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.
