First Bridge Deck Pour for California Incline

September 21, 2015 2:27 PM

When:    September 22, 2015 (weather permitting)

Where:   California Incline between Wilshire Boulevard and Washington Avenue

Santa Monica – Weather permitting, the first of three concrete pours for the California Incline Bridge deck will take place Tuesday, September 22, 2015.  The Incline project is 35% complete and the upper section being poured on the 22nd constitutes one-third of bridge.

Starting at approximately 7 a.m., approximately 1,000 cubic yards of concrete will be pumped to the deck portion of the bridge. The pour is expected to last approximately 8 hours.

It will take roughly 100 concrete mixer trucks to provide enough material to fill this section of the bridge (250 feet long by 52 feet wide by 1.8 feet deep). Trucks will be entering and exiting the site at the California Avenue and Ocean Avenue project entrance.

For the safety of the public, Palisades Park from Washington Avenue to the south end of the project fence will be closed.  Santa Monica Police Department Traffic Safety Officers will direct pedestrians to cross at Wilshire Boulevard and at Washington Avenue to access the sidewalk on the east side of Ocean Avenue.  The park closure at Washington Avenue will extend from Ocean Avenue to the barrier rail at the top of the bluff.  There will be no access past this point inside the park or on the sidewalk.

The Palisades Park diagonal parking area north of the project gate will be utilized as the staging area for the mixer trucks servicing the pour and will be closed to public parking.

Flaggers will be provided for traffic control and motorists are urged to drive carefully through the work area.

The CA Incline, an iconic symbol in Santa Monica, was last renovated in 1930.  To meet current seismic standards, the bridge is being reconstructed and when complete, it will be replaced with a wider, safer bridge with improved bicycle and pedestrian access.
