Santa Monica’s Out of the Blue Program Returns to Annenberg Community Beach House
Two artists showcase process, participation and art as a social practice in fun, interactive projects
July 27, 2018
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Out of the Blue is back and joined this summer by artists, Molly Allis and Therese Kelly, who will create projects that promote joy and illuminate our relationship with water. Santa Monica Cultural Affairs coordinates the Out of the Blue program, bringing artists to the Annenberg Community Beach House to create projects that embody the sights, sounds and people at the site.
From Tuesday, July 10 through Saturday, August 11, interdisciplinary artist and musician Molly Allis will be onsite every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from noon until 7 p.m., creating "The Storytelling Machine," a narrative sculpture made of stacked kinetic diorama boxes. Altogether, the dioramas will tell the story of a child's wonderful day. The completed sculpture will be unveiled on Saturday, August 11 at 10 a.m. and will be available until 6 p.m. for play and exploration with the artist.
- Friday, July 27 and Friday, August 3, 11 - 11:40 a.m. and 2 - 2:40 p.m.
- Storytelling Circles - informal gatherings where youth and families can exchange stories and inform the creation of The Storytelling Machine. To RSVP for this workshop, please click here.
From Friday, August 10 through Friday, August 31, social practice artist and landscape urbanist Therese Kelly will present “Under the Umbrella” through tours, a mobile game, and a temporary installation uncovering water’s hidden secrets on the Beach House grounds. The iPhone game challenges users with a fun series of quests and discoveries and is available for free. Therese will also lead participants in a shibori (Japanese tie dye) indigo dyeing workshop using plumbing pipes. All ages are welcome to participate in tours and workshops, but space is limited.
