COAST Celebrates Art and People-Powered Transportation

WHAT
Santa Monica’s free open streets celebration, COAST, returns on Sunday, September 15, featuring people-powered transportation, art, and imagination. Two miles of Santa Monica’s streets will be closed to cars and filled with a pageant of crowd-sourced creativity including live music, food, art, and hands-on activities. COAST turns the streets into a space for the community and creativity to come alive. Everyone is invited to be a part of COAST and bike, skate, scoot, run, walk, or roll and join the fun.

Sunday, September 15, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM    
WHERE
Two miles of Santa Monica streets will be closed to car traffic including Ocean Avenue from Wilshire Boulevard to Colorado Avenue, Colorado Avenue from 5th Street to Ocean Avenue, and Main Street from Colorado Avenue to Pier Avenue.    
MEDIA PARKING
Reserved media parking is available at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, located at 1855 Main St. and accessible from 4th St.
PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Join visual artist Molly Allis in the creation of a large communal mural highlighting car-free and imaginative forms of mobility.
    Location: Ocean Ave. at the intersection of Broadway Ave.
  • Try skate course workshops with Keen Ramps Skateboard Zone, or watch demonstrations and tricks performed by professional skateboarders.
    Location: Main St., between Pico Blvd. and Bay St.
  • Dragon Knights ensemble wows with their imaginative street and circus performances on stilts and human-powered conveyances.
    Location: Strolling Ocean Ave. between Wilshire Blvd. and Colorado Ave.
  • Ocean Ave. will feature two strolling groups: Mariachis Lindas Mexicanas, one of Southern California's top mariachi bands, and California Feetwarmers, masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing.
    Location: Strolling Ocean Ave., between Arizona Ave. and Colorado Ave.
  • Roll into the disco lifestyle at the free COAST Roller Rink complete with disco, funk and groovy music. Free skate rentals available.
    Location: Ocean Ave., between Wilshire Blvd. and Arizona Ave.
  • Observe or participate in the Giant Puppet Parade led by artist Beth Peterson and created by the community. The parade will feature live music by the Los Angeles-basedLatin folk group Cuñao.
    Time: 11 AM - 3:15 PM
    Location: The parade will begin at 11 AM at the Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main St., proceed to the Triangle on Colorado Blvd., and return at 12:30 PM to the Civic Auditorium. Second parade will begin at 1:30 PM and travel from the Civic Auditorium to Pacific Street Park on Main St., between Pacific St. and Bicknell Ave., and return to the Civic Auditorium at 3:15 PM.

If you created a costume or headpiece, float, people powered conveyance, or a large-scale human-powered surprise and are ready to flaunt your stuff, be sure to enter the all-new COAST Contest! This pageant of creativity celebrates creativity and car-free mobility. Gift certificates to some of Santa Monica’s Most Loved Businesses will be given to winners in a handful of categories.
    Time: 11 AM - 3:30 PM
    Location: Judging and check-in area in front of the Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main St.
