Santa Monica Applauds the Supreme Court’s Decision Overturning the Rescission of DACA

SANTA MONICA, Calif.   Santa Monica joins the over 800,000 dreamers, their loved ones, and their communities in applauding the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling today that the Trump Administration’s recission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program violated the law.

Since going into effect in 2012, young people who were brought to this country through no fault of their own relied on DACA to pursue higher education, start careers, businesses, and families, and otherwise contribute to their communities.  In suddenly and arbitrarily rescinding DACA in 2017, the Trump Administration failed to consider the impact that recission would have on DACA recipients—a critical failure the Supreme Court cited as the reason why the rescission was unlawful.

“The City of Santa Monica celebrates the Supreme Court’s decision to protect our Dreamers,” said Mayor Kevin McKeown. “The ruling brings welcome relief to many thousands of young people who have relied on DACA — and to communities like Santa Monica that are strengthened by, and benefit from, the contributions and presence of our DACA neighbors.”

The City of Santa Monica was one of 109 cities, counties, and municipal organizations that submitted an amicus, or “friend of the court,” brief urging the Supreme Court to rule that the rescission of DACA violated the law.
