SANTA MONICA, Calif. — On Monday, August 2, 2021, Interim Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks and Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) leadership invite the Santa Monica community to a facilitated conversation about the department’s response to the OIR Group’s after-action report for the events of May 31, 2020. Community members are invited to participate in a Q&A following an overview of SMPD’s response to OIR Group’s 44 recommendations by Chief Seabrooks. The teleconference meeting is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and community members can register through Eventbrite. Spanish translation will be available.

Today, SMPD’s response to the OIR Group’s report was published as an information item to the City’s website. The response was directed by Council at their May 11, 2021 meeting when they received the OIR Group’s after-action report. The information item is available at https://www.smgov.net/departments/council/infoitems.aspx.

In the information item, Chief Seabrooks shares: “In the months since May 31, 2020, the Police Department has been on a journey of learning, reconciliation, and healing.  The women and men of the organization have been working diligently to implement systems, policies, procedures, and training that improve individual and organizational performance in future unusual emergency circumstances. SMPD and its partners across the City organization are committed to rebuilding trust within our community, supporting one-another, and continuing to provide excellent municipal and safety services which embrace and integrate the OIR’s recommendations into the Department’s operations.”

Council also directed that the newly formed Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission review SMPD’s response. The Commission will take this up at a future meeting. For agenda and participation information, visit https://www.santamonica.gov/public-safety-reform-and-oversight-commission
