SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Nov. 27, 2023) — At its Nov. 14 meeting, the Santa Monica City Council voted to support Proposition 1, a state ballot initiative set for the March 2024 California primary ballot.

The initiative would reallocate billions of dollars to Californians with the most severe mental health needs, including those living in encampments and those struggling with addiction and substance use.

Through a $6.38 billion bond, it is anticipated that the measure would fund more than 11,150 new behavioral health beds and supportive housing units, with $1 billion set aside specifically for veterans. It would also enhance treatment availability and resources for Californians experiencing all types of behavioral health struggles.
