Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project to hold community event on Oct. 17

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2026) — After more than two years of community outreach and engagement, the Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project will move into its fourth phase with the unveiling of the Illustrative Master Plan for the site at a community event on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park Gymnasium.

The Illustrative Master Plan portrays how the future park will be organized and how people will move through it. At the community event, perspective drawings will bring key views to life so that people can picture themselves standing in the park. It will also provide an opportunity to share reactions and feedback directly with the project team.

Phase 4 – of five total phases – builds on community and City Council feedback on the Framework Diagram shared during Phase 3B, which established the park’s overall structure and distinct districts. Phase 3B included an online survey that ran from February to April and gathered more than 4,200 responses on the location of the districts within the site and potential uses. The results and comments from the survey can be round under the‘Resources’ tab on the project website.

"The airport land belongs to the people of Santa Monica, and its future should be decided by them," Mayor Caroline Torosis said. "Residents have given us their time and their ideas at every step of this process, and the latest survey results reflect that. I hope you will read them, join us on Oct. 17, and help us get this right for Santa Monicans who will use this space for generations to come."

Phasing, implementation and cost estimating recommendations will also be explored during Phase 4.

For those who cannot attend the Oct. 17 event, staff will share the Illustrative Master Plan and gather feedback at future board and commission meetings and through an online survey.

The Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project is a multi-year planning effort for Santa Monica to create a preferred scenario for the future of the airport site after aviation operations end in 2028. For the latest information and updates, visit smacproject.com.
