Pressure Washing Regulations

The City allows pressure washing only if all of the following requirements are met:

  • With the permission and knowledge of our Water Resources Protection division: 310-458-8235 (SMMC 7.16.020(b)(1))
  • For health and safety purposes (SMMC 7.16.020(f))
  • Using approved equipment (SMMC 7.16.020(b)(1))
  • Only water can be used: no soaps or chemicals
  • All wastewater must be recovered for recycling, disposed of in the sanitary sewer, or directed to landscaping (SMMC 7.16.020(b)(1))
  • No water is allowed to runoff to streets, alleys or storm drains (SMMC 7.16.020(b)(1))
  • Pressure washing must not exceed 0.006 gallons per square foot (SMMC 7.10.080(f))

Please note that the City of Santa Monica's Resource Recovery and Recycling Division offers pressure washing services for a moderate fee. State of the art equipment is used while adhering to the highest environmental standards to capture and recycle wash water. If you would like to schedule pressure washing services, please submit your request using the Santa Monica 311 System.
