How to Reserve a Volleyball Court or Beach Soccer Court

There are six areas on Santa Monica State Beach with beach volleyball courts available to reserve. There is also one beach soccer court which can be reserved at the Annenberg Community Beach House.

Beach Court Areas with courts open for reservations:

Ocean Park South (2600 Ocean Front Walk) - 9 courts
Ocean Park North (100 Hollister Ave) - 16 courts
Santa Monica Pier Courts (1560 Appian Way) - 4 courts with lights for nighttime play
Tournament Beach (1200 Pacific Coast Highway) - 15 courts
Sorrento Beach (810 Pacific Coast Highway) - 16 courts
Annenberg Community Beach House (415 Pacific Coast Highway) - 6 courts

There are also 8 courts available for first come, first serve play:

Ocean Park North Player's Courts (100 Hollister Ave) - 8 courts (no reservations)

3 Beach Volleyball and 1 Beach Soccer Court at the Annenberg Community Beach House can be reserved online through the ActiveNet system. An ActiveNet account is required to make court reservations online.

Reservations can be made up to 28 days in advance and fees are $15 per court per hour.

- Click on the "Annenberg Beach House Court + Field" Reservation group icon.
- Select the reservation date up to 28 days in advance.
- Enter an event name (required).
- Select the times that you would like to reserve the court(s).
- Click “Confirm bookings."
- Read and agree to ACBH - Site Rules and All Sales Are Final acknowledgement.
- Enter your initials in the signature box.
- Submit payment by credit card. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, and Diner’s Club International are accepted. Payments are non-refundable and non-transferable.
- A reservation confirmation will be sent via email but is not needed to check-in.

Beach Courts at all locations that have not been reserved are available for play on a first come, first serve basis.

Some courts at each location may be reserved in advance. Conditions apply according to:

Do I have to have a reservation to play beach volleyball in Santa Monica?

Beach volleyball courts are available on a first come, first serve basis for anybody to enjoy when not otherwise reserved. Even when some courts in an area are reserved, a portion of the courts are left open for first come, first serve play.

Can I reserve a court for my group of friends to play on?

Courts can be reserved for small groups of friends to have a place to play or for larger events like intercollegiate matches, recreational leagues or community tournaments.

What is included on the Beach Courts?

The beach courts include a net which is easily height adjustable. You may find court boundary lines set up on some courts. These are sometimes set up and left by other players. Please be respectful of this property.

You will need to bring your own volleyball to play with.

What are the Rules of Play for Santa Monica Beach Courts?

1) Play is on a first come, first serve basis, unless reserved through proper procedure.

2) Court nets may be adjusted by the players.

3) When no other courts are available, only one court may be held with a 15-minute time limit for all players to arrive. At least one person must be present to hold a court.

4) Players have the option to set up boundary lines and/or antennas on a court. Individual players are responsible for providing and setting up their own equipment.

5) Coaches or trainers who offer training services, paid or unpaid, must secure the appropriate permits from the Department before conducting such sessions.

6) After 12pm all courts are designated challenge courts if there are ANY players waiting to play and if there are no other courts available. An individual or a team may call challenges. The Pier Courts are Challenge Courts at all times. Challenge Team Configuration is as follows:

a) Teams playing women’s, men’s, or co-ed doubles, threes, fours, fives, or sixes may only be challenged by other teams of the same team configuration, unless otherwise agreed upon by the original team configuration on the court (e.g., a doubles team does not have to play against a sixes team unless it agrees to do so).

b) Upon accepting a challenge of a different team configuration, if the challenger wins the court, the court does not change court team configuration unless specifically agreed to by the original team configuration group, when accepting the challenge (i.e., women’s court accepting a co-ed challenge, if co-ed team wins it does not change the court to co-ed configuration unless original women’s group agrees prior to challenge ensuing).

7) Rules shall be appropriate to the level of play. Where there are disparate levels of play, rules shall apply to the higher level (e.g. hand setting). No referees are required. The policy will be to call your own fouls and settle disputes with a replay. CBVA rules are recommended.

8) Portable nets may be erected on a temporary basis as long as guy wires and anchors are clearly marked and the nets are erected in an area that does not obstruct normal beach traffic, lifeguard emergency access ways, or existing volleyball courts. Private portable nets are NOT subject to any of the restrictions listed above, with the exception of the first rule listed above.

Any behavior that is unsafe, a violation of Santa Monica State Beach rules, or unsporting conduct is prohibited. Examples of unsporting conduct include but may not be limited to: aggressive, intimidating, abusive or threatening actions or language, profanity, destruction of property or fighting.
