Summer Reading 2018 Kicks Off at the Library on Saturday, June 9

Santa Monica, California – Summer Reading is for everyone! Santa Monica Public Library kicks off its Summer Reading Program on Saturday, June 9, 2018, with a series of events for all ages that reflects this year’s theme, Reading Takes You Everywhere!, at Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

 

From 11:00 to 11:45 am, TAIKOPROJECT, a premiere Taiko group that unites ancient Japanese tradition with 21st century innovation, displays their unique drumming style in the Main Library’s North Courtyard.

 

From 11:45 am to 12:30 pm, a family craft activity will be held in the North Courtyard. Make your own mini-balloon, bookmark, or fan to cool yourself off on those hot summer days!

 

Kids, Teens and Adults can join the Library’s Reading Takes You Everywhere! Summer Reading Program. The Library offers the Baby & Me Club (birth to 17 months), Read to Me Club (2 to 5 years), Independent Readers Club (kindergarten to grade 5), Teen Club (grades 6 to 12), and Adult Summer Reading for ages 18 and up. Participants of all ages will earn prizes for time spent reading, listening to audiobooks or reading to others and can enjoy a range of free activities and performances. 

 

Adults (ages 18 and up)

Adults receive a summer reads tote bag just for signing up! Upon completion, participants will receive a coupon for a free book priced at $2 or less from the Friends of Santa Monica Public Library Friends Bookstore. Those that complete 20 hours of reading and turn in their participation card will be entered to win one of three $50 gift cards.

 

Youth (from birth through 12th grade)

Kids and teens receive a tote bag and a coupon for a free small yogurt at Yogurtland on Lincoln and Pico Blvd. Those who meet the reading goals will receive prizes as follows:

 

Baby & Me Club (birth to 17 months)

Sign up and get a free tote bag and board book

 

Read to Me (2 to 5 years) & Independent Readers Clubs (kindergarten to grade 5):

5 Hours: flying butterflies OR metallic balloon race cars

10 Hours: groan tubes OR ninja squishies

15 Hours: choice of free book

 

Teens (6th-12th grade):

10 Hours: earbuds with phone stand

20 Hours: choice of glow-in-the-dark putty or giant glitter star ball

30 Hours: Free book

40 hours: Entry into bonus prize drawing for a $50 Visa gift card

All Library programs are free and open to all ages. Seating at events is limited and on a first arrival basis. Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. Lines 2, 3, R3 and 9 stop nearby. Ride your bike. Bicycle parking racks are available at the library.
