Biking around Santa Monica

Bicycling is one of the best ways to get around Santa Monica. Adding miles of bikeways to the existing bike network enhances the safety, comfort, and efficiency of biking in the City.

As of 2022, 119 miles out of the Bike Action Plan’s 187 miles of bikeways have been built. The City aims to continue expanding this bike network annually. In addition to expansion, the City is regularly maintaining and upgrading existing biking infrastructure to support bikers in Santa Monica.

The City’s Bike Action Plan addresses traffic congestion and promotes active, healthy living by setting a course for creating a Santa Monica that is bike-friendly for all. It calls for both programs and facilities, and includes practical five-year implementation priorities as well as a bold 20-year vision for getting more people to use bicycles for transportation. Bicycling has the fastest-growing share of employee commute trips, and many visitors come to Santa Monica specifically because they don’t need a car here. The City has been designated a “Bike Friendly Community” by the League of American Bicyclists for efforts to promote cycling in the areas of education, engineering, enforcement, encouragement, and evaluation.
