Hello, Santa Monica

To the Santa Monica Community – it is with tremendous excitement that today I begin my first day as your City Manager.
Over the past two weeks my wife and I have made the journey from Northern California and are settling into our new home and neighborhood. Over this time, we have had a chance to reflect and immerse ourselves in this special place. From early morning runs throughout the City to produce runs at the Pico Farmers Market to last minute trips to Bob’s Market for dinner ingredients and meeting so many kind and generous neighbors at National Night Out, our introduction to Santa Monica has made our hearts full.
I am incredibly eager to work with the City Council and take the time to get to know residents, business and property owners, the diverse community organizations, dedicated volunteers, and members of our Boards and Commissions that make Santa Monica a community with strong ties, and the tremendous employees that serve this community on a daily basis. As I look forward to meeting you, here’s a little bit about me.
I was born and raised in Southern California. On my journey back home, I have lived in Boston, Brooklyn, Berkeley, El Cerrito, and now Santa Monica. I have worked in both the private and public sectors. I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have one daughter who just started her sophomore year at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia (Go Jaguars!). I also have two dogs, am a vegan, love coffee, love to run early in the morning, and thoroughly enjoy music.
I am passionate about local government and committed to excellence in public service. I respect this work and know there is no higher calling. Day in and day out, the talented City team that I now join is relied upon to provide services to each and every person who lives here, works here, and visits here, and our work is critical to ensuring that we are a safe, vibrant, and resilient community. I respect and value the wisdom, passion, and commitment of our City Council and look forward to advancing their priorities.
You may be wondering about my leadership style. I believe in and am committed to a collaborative and inclusive approach to solving problems. When we work together and build strong partnerships that value the input of each and every person’s perspective, I am confident that we will be successful.
Coming into this job in this moment, I am mindful that the past year and a half has been hard. The pandemic has been mentally and physically exhausting, and has had dire financial consequences. In addition, I am sober to the fact that the City organization and service levels have been deeply impacted. We have important work to do to chart a path forward to restore service levels and implement approaches to serve the community well with limited resources. It’s all possible and I am ready to get to work.
As I hit the ground running this week with an important City Council meeting tomorrow, and time scheduled to visit facilities and meet with a wide array of stakeholders, I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible on a personal level. Please say hello and I very much look forward to doing the same. Hello, Santa Monica!

Para la comunidad de Santa Mónica – es con tremenda emoción que hoy comienzo mi primer día como Administrador de la Ciudad.
Durante estas últimas dos semanas mi esposa y yo hicimos el viaje desde California del Norte y nos estamos instalando en nuestro nuevo hogar y vecindario. Durante este tiempo, tuvimos la oportunidad de reflexionar y sumergirnos en este lugar especial. Desde correr en la mañana a través de la Ciudad, recorridos por los pasillos de vegetales en el Pico Farmers Market a viajes a último minuto a Bob's Market por ingredientes para la cena y conocer tantos vecinos tan amables y generosos en la National Night Out, nuestra introducción a Santa Mónica ha llenado nuestros corazones.
Me emociona increíblemente trabajar con el Ayuntamiento y tomarme el tiempo para conocer residentes, negocios y propietarios de inmuebles, las diversas organizaciones comunitarias, voluntarios dedicados y miembros de nuestras Juntas y Comisiones que hacen de Santa Mónica una comunidad con lazos fuertes, y los impresionantes empleados que sirven a la comunidad en el día a día. Mientras espero con ansias conocerles, aquí les presento un poco sobre mí.
Nací y fui criado en California del Sur. En mi viaje de vuelta a casa, he vivido en Boston, Brooklyn, Berkeley, El Cerrito, y ahora en Santa Mónica. He trabajado tanto en sectores privados como públicos. Me casé con mi novia de secundaria, y tenemos una hija que acaba de empezar su segundo año en Spelman College en Atlanta, Georgia (¡Go Jaguars!). También tengo dos perros, soy vegano, amo el café, amo correr temprano en la mañana y realmente disfruto la música.
Soy apasionado por el gobierno local y estoy comprometido a la excelencia en el servicio público. Respeto este trabajo y sé que no hay vocación superior. Cada día, se confía en el equipo de Ciudad al que me estoy uniendo para proveer servicios a cada persona que vive, trabaja y visita aquí y nuestro trabajo es fundamental para garantizar que somos una comunidad segura, vibrante y fuerte. Respeto y valoro la sabiduría, la pasión y el compromiso de nuestro Ayuntamiento y espero avanzar en sus prioridades.
Se estarán preguntando sobre mi estilo de liderazgo. Yo creo y estoy comprometido a un enfoque colaborativo e inclusivo para resolver problemas. Cuando trabajamos juntos y creamos asociaciones sólidas que valoren el aporte de la perspectiva de cada persona, confío en que tendremos éxito.
Al llegar a este trabajo en este momento, estoy consciente de que el último año y medio ha sido duro. La pandemia nos ha agotado física y mentalmente y ha traído graves consecuencias financieras. Además, sé que la organización de la Ciudad y los niveles de servicio se han visto profundamente afectados. Tenemos un trabajo importante que hacer para trazar un camino a seguir para restaurar los niveles de servicio e implementar enfoques para servir bien a la comunidad con recursos limitados. Todo es posible y estoy listo para ponerme a trabajar.
Mientras comienzo esta semana con una reunión importante con el Ayuntamiento mañana, y tiempo programado para visitar instalaciones y reunirme con una gran variedad de partes interesadas, espero con ansias conocer tantos de ustedes como sea posible a nivel personal.
