Sustainable City Plan

The City of Santa Monica has long been known for its leadership in the field of sustainability. In 1994, Santa Monica became one of the first cities to adopt a comprehensive Sustainable City Plan with measurable targets. The Sustainable City Plan declares that the City’s decision-making process is guided by the mandate to maximize environmental benefits and reduce or eliminate negative environmental impacts. The Sustainable City Plan uses the power of community to enhance our resources, prevent harm to the natural environment and human health, and benefit the social and economic well-being of the community for the sake of current and future generations. The City must regularly evaluate whether its plans, laws, and programs are sufficient to meet and explore all means of addressing the growing environmental crisis.

The Sustainable City Plan is continually evolving and adapting to community priorities and sustainability best practices and remains part of the enduring strategic policy initiatives for Santa Monica’s future.
