Statement on 2021-2022 Beach Report Card

June 23, 2022 1:46 PM

The City of Santa Monica is pleased to see several of our beach areas have received top grades in Heal the Bay’s 2021-2022 Beach Report Card. The City acknowledges the real challenges of limiting bird excrement at the Santa Monica Pier—the primary source of pollution in the waters surrounding the Pier—and the City is working to replace the existing bird deterrent netting at the Pier. We hope to have this new netting installed in summer 2023.

Over the years, the City has continued to implement numerous efforts to mitigate pollutants from urban runoff entering the Santa Monica Bay, such as the Santa Monica Urban Runoff Recycling Facility (SMURRF), Pier storm drain diversion to the Clean Beaches Initiative cistern, trash separators at five storm drain outfalls and bird deterrent installations to keep polluted runoff out of the Santa Monica Bay. These efforts improve local coastal water quality, store runoff for beneficial uses, and increase the City’s local water resource supply and reduce the use of imported water.
