How to Register for Library Self Service

Library Self-Service is available at the Fairview Branch, Montana Branch, and Ocean Park Branch. The Self-Service model allows eligible patrons access to browse, read, study, search the online catalog, checkout items, and use the computer stations. Printing and photocopying are available, as is Wi-Fi for those who bring their own devices.

Adult cardholders with active accounts in good standing can access Self-Service locations using their library card and PIN during open hours. If you have questions about your access, please contact library@santamonica.gov.

What are the eligibility requirements for Self-Service access?

To be eligible for Self-Service Hours at the Santa Monica Public Library, individuals must meet the following requirements:

Be 18 years of age or older
Possess a valid full-access library card
Be able to provide valid photo identification and proof of address
Understand that self-service access is limited, and library staff may not be present
Be in good standing with the Santa Monica Public Library

What are the terms of agreement for Self-Service access?

Library card holders agree to the following terms when accessing Self-Service locations:

Accepts responsibility for the space, equipment, and furniture during the time they access a Library branch equipped with self-service technology.
Complies with Santa Monica Public Library Rules of Conduct policies and guidelines, including the Computer and Internet Use Policy.
Understands that per the Santa Monica Municipal Code section 1.08.030 (c) any person who violates any rule or regulation pertaining to the use of Library facilities may be subject to suspension of their borrowing or Library visitation privileges.
Understands that Library staff will not be available in person when they access Self-Service technology, but remote staff assistance is available by phone or email. If issues cannot be resolved remotely, they may visit an open, full-service Library facility.
Understands that youth younger than 18 years of age MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
Agrees that they will not open the entrance to a Library branch equipped with Self-Service technology to other persons (who may or may not have Self-Service Access) other than for immediate family.
Understands that the Library branch where Self-Service technologies are available are monitored by security cameras during all hours.
Will not access any staff areas or prohibited areas.
Will be able to summon help by calling 911 in an emergency.
Understands and agrees that access to Self-Service technologies and facilities are limited to eligible patrons. The City may revoke access due to violations of any rule or regulation pertaining to the self-service program, or if the City discontinues the program.

What services are available at a Self-Service Branch?

Services Available:

Self-Checkouts – Kiosks for checkouts and account management.
Online Catalog Stations – Stations for online account management, renewals, searching, and discovery of Library material and online resources.
Information Services – Reference and information services are available by phone (310) 458-8600 during operational hours or by email at library@santamonica.gov.
Study Space – The Library is available for studying, working, and reading.
Technology – The Library is equipped with public access computer stations. Printing and photocopying are available, as is Wi-Fi for those who bring their own devices.

Services Not Available:

In-Person Account Management – For assistance with accounts, account registrations, renewals, PIN number questions, or support, please visit a full-service location or call (310) 458-8600 during operational hours.
In-Person Technical Assistance – Report technical issues to library@santamonica.gov or (310) 458-8600. Technical support is not available at Self-Service Branches. The issue may need to be resolved at a later time.
