Digital Kiosks

The City has partnered with BIG Outdoor to provide a digital wayfinding and out-of-home advertising kiosk program. This new program will provide interactive information to residents and visitors, enhance public safety via emergency capabilities, deliver community messaging, and generate revenues to support City services and programs through advertising sales.

How much revenue will the kiosk program generate for the city?

Deployment of the kiosk network  is structured as a franchise agreement with the selected vendor BIG Outdoor for a 20-year term. The agreement will generate a minimum of $5 million in revenue to the City annually and includes a one-time signing bonus of $4 million.

When will the new kiosks be installed?

Kiosk installation will begin Spring 2024.

What are the community benefits?

Wayfinding + Economic Recovery: Direct residents and visitors to local hotspot destinations and highlight small businesses.
Public Wi-Fi: It is estimated that 80% of international tourists travel without an international data plan.
Community Messaging: Announcements for events and community programs and services, as well as public art exhibits and local artist spotlights.
Transit Information: Real-time transit information and shared mobility locations will help residents and visitors get around town. #GoSaMo
Inclusive + Accessible: Information provided in all major languages, ADA accessible, and kiosks include special features for hearing and vision impaired users.
Public Safety: Kiosks include emergency blue phones, emergency alerts, and optional surveillance during emergency situations.
3-1-1 Access: Provide access to City of Santa Monica's 3-1-1 customer service portal.
Community Advocate: Long-time Santa Monica resident will be single point of contact for all community questions and concerns.
Maintenance + Repair: BIG Outdoor will handle all kiosk maintenance, repair, and replacement needs, with a maintenance team available 7 days per week.
Revenue-Generating: City will receive 50% of net kiosk revenues ($5M guarantee/year) and received a $4M signing bonus - all to support community priorities!
