Pickleball

The City of Santa Monica's primary location for Pickleball, Memorial Park, located 1401 Olympic Blvd., has pickleball lines painted on the 4 tennis courts. Each tennis court accomodates 4 pickleball courts. When not used for City programs or approved permits, Courts 1-2 are first come, first serve for either tennis or pickleball (with personal, portable net). Court 3 has pickleball nets on wheels and are first come, first serve for either tennis or pickleball. Court 4 has dedicated pickleball nets available for open play. The portable pickleball nets are provided through a joint agreement between the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Pickleball Club.

John Adams Middle School has dedicated times for pickleball on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-12pm. Weekends after 12pm and Weekdays, 5pm-dusk are first come, first serve (tennis or pickleball) unless otherwise permitted by SMMUSD.

How do I enroll for Drop-in Pickleball?

Drop in Pickleball is offered Monday and Wednesday nights, 5pm-9:30pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am-11am and 11:15am-2:15pm.
Create an Activenet account, upon creating account you can include family members- For each Drop-in session you can register up to two people. After creating Activenet account, type "pickleball" in the search bar and click ont he date and time you want to play. Note that registration is according to skill level. When you've made your selection proceed to the cart and checkout. Enrollment for each session opens at 6am, 7 days in advance for residents; 5 days in advance for non-residents. If space is available, we will accept walk-in registrations.

What are the Pickleball etiquette and safety rules?

Pickleball is governed by the USA Pickleball Association. The association maintains the rules, promotes the sports, sanctions tournaments and provides rankings. For more information visit USAPAA.org.

Always be respectful and inclusive
Play at your level
When the ball enters the court, call "Ball On!"
When unsure on a call, the benefit of the doubt goes to your opponent.
When waiting, stay clear of the play area
Private instruction is not allowed
Dogs are not allowed on the courts except for service animals specifically trained to aid a person with a disability.
Players must abide by the decision of city staff regarding the interpretation of any rules governing the use of the courts.

What are the rules when other players are waiting?

At peak times and when others are waiting to play:

Limit warm up time to 5 minutes
Use the paddle stacking system to rotate players
Games are to 11, win by 1.
If more than 4 paddles are stacked then games are to 8, win by 1.
No drilling allowed
One person cannot hold a court when others are waiting

Courts 1 and 2:
When another group is waiting the use of personal, portable nets are limited to 1 hour.

Courts 3 and 4:
These courts are designed for open play.

Can courts be reserved for Individual Lessons/Programs/Events?

At this time private instruction is not allowed. Please visit the Santa Monica Pickleball Club for information about clinics and learning opportunities. For events and group rentals please contact Memorial Park. Violators are subject to prosecution.
