Santa Monica boasts nearly 300 days of sunshine per year (despite 2023’s unique cloudiness), making our city a prime location for solar energy. Many commercial and residential buildings throughout Santa Monica have already taken steps to harness solar energy in order to save money, reduce carbon emissions, and add resiliency, but there is still vast untapped solar potential in our city.

The City's Climate Action & Adaptation Plan calls for increased local solar to help reach a goal of 80% carbon emissions reduction by 2030. To support this goal, the City is relaunching Solar Santa Monica, a free service to help residents and businesses looking to go solar. Through Solar Santa Monica, owners of residential and commercial properties can find resources and experts with unbiased technical advice to help them navigate the various rules, incentives, and financing options for solar arrays, battery storage, and more.

Producing local solar energy helps deliver clean power to Santa Monica residents and businesses, and pairing these systems with battery storage increases community resiliency in the event of power outages. There are also many financial reasons to add solar. Adding solar to your property can greatly reduce your electric bills over the 25-to-30-year life of the system and can increase the value of your property.
