Fall is filled with reasons to ride public transit! From advocacy and sustainability initiatives to free Big Blue Bus rides and fun community events, there are so many reasons this season to hop on board and give transit a try.
SoCal Transit Month
Big Blue Bus celebrates SoCal Transit Month all September long! Organized by our friends at Move LA, Week Without Driving, America Walks, and the Coalition for Clean Air, SoCal Transit Month aims to promote sustainable alternatives to driving, bring together the growing community of public transit riders, and challenge those who don’t regularly ride transit to give it a try.
California Pedestrian Safety Month
Also recognized in September is California Pedestrian Safety Month. Whether driving, taking transit, walking, biking, scooting, or rolling, California Pedestrian Safety Month is a reminder for everyone on the streets to be mindful of each other and help keep our streets safe for all who use them.
Zero Emissions Day
September 21, 2026, is the 19th Annual global observance of Zero Emissions Day! This year’s theme, “Give our planet one day off a year,” urges drivers to forgo gas-powered vehicles and try a more sustainable alternative to driving, like taking public transit, walking, or biking, for just one day.
A Week Without Driving
Led by advocates, organizations, and elected officials from across the U.S., A Week Without Driving, from October 1-8, 2026, seeks to raise awareness of the more than one-third of people in the U.S. who are nondrivers—whether due to disabilities, age, or economic reasons. A Week Without Driving asks drivers to experience what it’s like to not use a car for a week to gain experience and learn how to improve our communities' multimodal networks.
Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week
Santa Monica K-12 students can ride Big Blue Bus FREE during Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week held October 5-9,2026. This initiative encourages students and their families to choose eco-friendly transportation options for their daily commute, such as biking, walking, or using public transit.
California Clean Air Day
Big Blue Bus will also offer FREE RIDES for all during California Clean Air Day on October 7, 2026. The Coalition for Clean Air's statewide initiative highlights how individual actions can positively impact the health of our communities and environment. By choosing a sustainable transportation option like Big Blue Bus’s zero-emission fleet, you can help reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.
Whether you’re a longtime rider or trying Big Blue Bus for the first time, there’s no better time to discover the benefits of public transit and be part of the movement toward a greener, more sustainable and accessible future.
