Case Study: Adapt exhibit walk through
Join design thinker Frances Anderton and exhibit curator Geoffrey von Oeyen for a walkthrough of "Case Study: Adapt" in its penultimate week at the Santa Monica City Gallery at Bergamot Station. This event is offered during the quarterly Bergamot Station Arts Center open house, where the galleries and other arts organizations onsite offer a plethora of exhibit receptions and other events. Anderton and von Oeyen will discuss the various strategies that local architecture firms used to address rebuilding in the Palisades and Altadena fire zones.
All are invited to visit the site early to visit the other arts organizations, then come by the City Gallery at F2 to get acquainted with the exhibit. There will be limited seating. The talk will begin at 4:30pm and will be followed by a Q&A at 5pm. The Fall Open House at Bergamot is likely to be well attended from 12pm onward, so taking Metro to 26th Street Station is highly recommended. Limited surface parking.
Case Study: Adapt gathers ten of Los Angeles’ leading architecture firms to redefine residential design for a changing climate. Each architect paired with families who lost their homes to wildfire in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena —16 families in total—with construction set to begin soon. The models on display in the exhibit were assembled by students at USC Architecture from these designs. Frances Anderton covers Los Angeles design and architecture in print, broadcast media and public events. She is the author of the award-winning book Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles, and co-author of Awesome and Affordable: Great Housing Now. With Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles and Wyota Workshop, Anderton co-created The Angeleno Porch: Six Social Spaces Shaping L.A.’s Affordable Housing, an exhibit for the US Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, illustrating the theme PORCH: An Architecture of Generosity. She was a 2025 Santa Monica Artist Fellow.
From 2002 to 2020 Anderton hosted DnA: Design and Architecture, aired on KCRW public radio station. She also produced KCRW’s current affairs shows Which Way, LA? and To The Point. She now writes a regular DnA newsletter for KCRW. Honors include the Esther McCoy Award, from the USC Architectural Guild, for her work educating the public about architecture and urbanism. Geoffrey von Oeyen, AIA, NCARB is Principal of Geoffrey von Oeyen Design and von Oeyen Architects, based in Los Angeles, and is the Associate Director of Graduate Architecture Programs at the USC School of Architecture. The recipient of multiple national awards including the Architectural League Prize, Next Progressives, and a MacDowell Fellowship, his built architectural projects in North America and Asia have been widely published in international architectural publications such as Architect, Architectural Record, Dezeen, Architizer, and the Architect’s Newspaper.
Geoffrey von Oeyen Design was selected as one of ten architecture firms to reimagine the iconic Case Study Program published by Arts & Architecture magazine through Case Study: Adapt and Architectural Digest in response to the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. His architecture for Case Study: Adapt received a 2026 International Architecture Award from the European Center for Architecture and Art and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. Von Oeyen’s built work was exhibited in the 2023 Venice Biennale “Time Space Existence”, curated by the European Cultural Centre. He has served as the president of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design, an Associate at Gehry Partners LLP, and received an MArch from the Harvard Graduate School of Design with the Faculty Design Award, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge as a US-UK Fulbright Scholar, and an AB (Hons) from Stanford University.
