Library Databases

The Santa Monica Public Library offers a wide range of business, consumer, and research databases. Most are accessible from home with a valid library card. Ancestry Library Edition - The Library Edition of the popular genealogy resource. Search a wealth of records, including census, birth, marriage and death, military, immigration and more. This searchable database is available only in the Library.

Archives of Sexuality & Gender: LGBTQ History and Culture Since 1940 - The largest collection available in support of the study of gender and sexuality. Enables scholars to make new connections in LGBTQ history and activism, cultural studies, psychology, health, political science, policy studies, and other related areas of research.

Brainfuse Online Tutoring - Get live online homework help from an expert tutor.

Coursera - Build job-relevant, in-demand skills by learning with experts from world-class companies and universities. This resource is available thanks to funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

DRAM - Streaming service for new, creative, and unusual music.

eBooks & eApps - Enjoy ebooks and audiobooks on your computer, compatible portable device, or smartphone. Watch streaming video, listen to music, and read magazines. Learn a new language. And more.

Foundation Directory Online Professional - The Foundation Center’s directory of foundation and company grantmakers and non-profit grant recipients. This database is available only in the Main Library.

Foundation Center Grants to Individuals Online - The Foundation Center’s directory that provides detailed descriptions of foundations that fund students, artists, researchers, and other individual grantseekers. This database is available only in the Main Library.

GetSetUp - A social learning platform for individuals 50+, taught by peers. The classes are live and consist of digital learning, physical health, mental health, social health, and vocational health. Courses include: Introduction to YouTube, Get Started with Zoom, Common Scams and Frauds, Being the Best Grandparent, and more! This resource is available thanks to funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

GuideStar - Candid’s directory of nonprofits. Use GuideStar to research local nonprofits to support and to find services. This searchable database is available only in the Main Library.

Imagine Santa Monica - Online local history materials, including photographs, maps, newspaper citations and the contents of the Santa Monica Evening Outlook newspaper for the years 1875 -1937.

JobNow - Get help writing resumes and conducting job interviews with live assistance (via online chat) and related resources. You must set up a free account for online chat services. This resource is available thanks to funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

LinkedIn Learning - Focuses on the skills needed to land jobs that are currently in-demand. Provides professional certificates that can be added to a LinkedIn profile. Offers critical soft skills training, such as resilience, teamwork, and time management. Course instruction available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and four other languages. This resource is available thanks to funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

MasterFILE Complete - Magazine and journal articles from thousands of publications.

Morningstar Investment Research Center - An all-inclusive database providing comprehensive data and analysis of more than 35,000 investments, including stocks, mutual funds and other types of investment.

New York Times Online - Use your Santa Monica Public Library card to create a free account and get 24-hour unlimited access to the digital edition of The New York Times. 

Northstar Digital Literacy - Focuses on people with no, low, or limited technology skills. Provides assessments of 14 different digital skills including Microsoft Office. Is used by some CA literacy programs. Offers courses that include: Email, Internet Basics, and Information Literacy. This resource is available thanks to funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

NoveList Plus - Provides subject access, reviews and much more for the thousands of fiction and non-fiction titles.

PressReader - Enjoy digital versions of over 7,000 newspapers and magazines in more than 60 languages, including the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post and The Globe and Mail. Access using their website or mobile app. This resource is available thanks to funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library.

ProQuest Newspapers - Newspaper articles from Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.

Recent Newspapers is ProQuest’s digital microfilm product. It provides the microfilm experience in a digital format. It consists of full-page images of every page of the newspapers (from 2008 up to 3 months ago), including Sunday classifieds and is completely full-text searchable.
