How to Apply for a Private Outdoor Space Permit

Thank you for your interest in participating in the Santa Monica Private Outdoor Space Program.  A permit is required to operate an outdoor dining area or other outdoor activity for eligible commercial uses within the commercial property.

  1. Review

    Before submitting your application, review the Private Open Space Manual. 

    Prepare a site plan and floor plan drawing of your proposed area. 

  2. Download and fill an application

    Now that you are prepared, download and fill out the Outdoor Space Program application. Follow the steps to complete your application. 

  3. Schedule an appointment

    Schedule a 30-minute virtual appointment with City Planning in the following link: City Planning Appointment

  4. Appointment and application submittal

    You will work directly with a Planner during the appointment to ensure application completeness. All this happens virtually and you do not need to come to the City.
